Self-assembling robots
Self-assembling robots could be the future of snack delivery
The project is titled "Spatially Targeted Communication and Self-Assembly," and it allows flying drone robots to communicate with a group of ground-based swarm robots.
This significantly increases the swarm bots' sensing range to give them a better idea of which morphology—or formation of robots—would be appropriate for a given environment.
Incredibly, the flying robots communicate with their grounded companions through a series of LED light displays, as Gizmodo points out. I would explain it further, but it might be best just to watch it in action yourself:

Παρουσιάζουμε τον Οδυσσέα, ένα ρομποτικό σύστημα ασφαλούς πειραματισμού με αντικείμενο την αυτόνομη επίγεια πλοήγηση σε εξωτερικούς χώρους. Η ανάπτυξη του οχήματος βασίστηκε σε ένα απλό ηλεκτροκίνητο παιδικό αμαξίδιο. Ο στόχος ήταν η μετατροπή του αμαξιδίου από χειροδηγούμενο όχημα σε αυτόνομης πλοήγησης, το οποίο θα είχε την ικανότητα να ακολουθεί προκαθορισμένες διαδρομές. NXT Battle Tank
This "Battle Tank" creation uses parts from the NXT (8527) set and the 8275 Power Functions Bulldozer set (sadly, no longer available from LEGO). It combines the NXT and two NXT motors with a LEGO Power Functions setup of 2 XL motors, 1 M motor, 2 IR receivers, and 1 PF battery pack, and various parts from both sets.
The whole model was designed from scratch from the ground up. The treaded chassis in particular outperforms the bulldozer chassis in several ways I think (faster, climbs better, treads don't fall off when turning on carpet, more compact, fewer parts), in addition to making space in the center down low for the NXT brick.
I built this and filmed the video clips a while back but never got around to editing and posting the video. But now that I am on a roll with remote control...
The NXT part of this is not that complex or interesting, with one notable exception: I found a way to get the Power Functions IR receiver to give sensor input to the NXT, so that you can partially control NXT creations using the PF remote control, which is what made this project possible.
I also put the ultrasonic sensor on it so that I could do something autonomous with it too, but I never got around to it because the remote control was too much fun :-). And then I needed the parts so I took it all apart...

When you turn the dial AND change direction, the Safe "accepts" the code that was on the display just before you changed direction... One small lock (in the display) opens to confirm the code entry. After doing this five times you wait... It starts laughing when you took a wrong combination! So the lock accepts 5 numbers by changing the rotation direction of the wheel. And, dialing 45 to the right is not the same as 45 to the left. So you have 5 entries of "-99to +99". It does not tell you what code is correct.

This is more of a CnC Router. A 3D Printer is something that prints objects from materials, a CnC Router cuts objects into shapes specified by a program. A Lego 3D printer wouldn't really work out to well because of the heat generated to melt the materials for molding.

This is huge lego mindstorm robotic arm. It took 9 months for building and programming. It weighs 4,2 kg without load. The full glass of water in the video weighs 600 g. This lego robotic arm has one lego NXT, one lego RCX brain, 5 functions and 7 motors, some of which are lego technic PF XL motors. It has also a lego pneumatic claw. I use a genetic algorithm that trains the 5-7-2 neural network (5 inputs, 7 neurons in the hidden layer and 2 in output). The 5 inputs are the 5 areas that the IR scans using the third servo, and the 2 outputs are the speed of each wheel servo.
